Political Relations

Algeria-India relations date back to the days of the Algerian liberation struggle (1954-62) when India advocated the cause of Algerian independence at the United Nations and other international fora. Following Algerian independence and the establishment of the diplomatic relations in July 1962, this policy orientation brought India and Algeria closer and their relations have been characterized by a convergence of approach on major issues of international concern.

The warmth and closeness of these relations have been reflected by high level exchanges between India and Algeria. They include visits by Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi in 1973 and Shri Rajiv Gandhi in June 1985, visits of President Chadli Bendjedid in 1982, 1983 and 1987, to name a few.

The visit to India on January 2001 of the Republic's President, M. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is considered as the first Arab leader invited as a chief guest by India for the Republic Day, had helped open real prospects of revitalisation with the signing of a “Declaration of Strategic Partnership”.

Since then, the political dialogue is always being strengthened between the two parties, believing that the political process would certainly promote economic ties. It is in this sense that Mr. E. Ahamed, then Minister of State for External Affairs of India visited Algeria on April 2013. He was received by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria.

As part of the revival of dialogue at high levels, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries continue regularly to hold political consultations. The last 5th round was held in New Delhi on May 2015.

Finally, it is worth noting the visit to India of Algerian Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, Mr. Taib LOUH, to attend the 16th International Conference of Chief Justices, which took place at Lucknow, on 7-13 October 2015. During his visit, Mr. Louh met with Dr. V.K. Singh, Minister of State of External Affairs of India.
