Algeria has been unanimously elected, on 11th July 2024, as a member in the Committee of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the term 2024-2028, on behalf of the Arab Group, at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, during the 10th General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in presence of 178 representatives, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
“This international merit expresses the confidence of the international community in Algeria and the importance of its national policy in maintaining, promoting and developing its rich intangible cultural heritage”, highlighting that “Algeria’s election as a member in this Committee, is a culmination of its efforts in serving the intangible cultural heritage, as well as, represents Algeria leadership in the field of cultural heritage at the world level and our country’s tireless activity in defending our intangible cultural heritage components in the UNESCO, as several Algerian intangible cultural heritage elements have been registered on the UNESCO list”, the statement mentioned.
“Algeria's election came within the framework of the 10th session of the General Assembly of the signatory States of the Convention for the safeguarding of intangible heritage work, during which the members are elected for a term of four (04) years”, the statement stated.
The Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, is one of the basic committees in UNESCO, established on the sidelines of the signature of the International Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in October 2003.
